1001cranes just posted the final chapter of multiplied by seven. IDEK you guys, it's fucked up in so many different ways, and I was absolutely enamored. The writing is rich, and takes you right into the headspace of the characters. Sheriff is his usual good father self, written as a real character and not just a 2-dimensional background figure. Stiles and Derek are completely in character - minus the werewolf bit ... wait, come back! You still need to consider reading this even if it doesn't contain wolves.

Instead of the werewolf power imbalance, 1001cranes goes to the bone chillingly realistic chan power imbalance. Stiles is a realistically immature 13 when the storyline starts, and Derek is 16 year old juvenile delinquent. They still manage to fall in love of sorts, although it's deliberately ambiguous if Stiles really has any clue about anything other than his out of control sex hormones when he and Derek start out together. Derek is compelling, fucked up enough to be sympathetic, and predatory enough to be every parent's nightmare.

Despite - or perhaps more honestly because of this - the story sizzles. Sex, angst, love, and family all come together to make you want the story to keep going, while the angel on your shoulder is whispering that you will go to hell for liking it so much.

Read the first one first, it deserves it's own recommendation, and makes the second one that much more rich.

Deslea's latest Tonks/Lucius Narcissa/Lucius story is a masterpiece. Told from Narcissa's POV, we see the horrors and aftermath of Voldemort's war, and the human impact it leaves. Narcissa is complex and utterly sympathetic, shown as a product of her upbringing but also as an intelligent and fiercely determined woman facing unbeatable odds.

I grieved with Narcissa as I read this. The language is rich and carries the reader into her reality. The warnings refer to happenings in the previous piece in the series, and should not scare you off. Rape as a weapon of war is not sexualized, and handled well. Ultimately this is a character study, with the kind of world building we could only wish was included in the source canon material.

Summary:

Narcissa knows there is another woman - but when she learns who and why, she must make hard choices to bring them all through a hell of someone else's making. A journey of silent dignity and selflessness. Narcissa's perspective on The Blue Vial. (You can read this on its own, but if you're going to read both, it's better to read Blue Vial first).

Delsea has written thoughtful and engaging Lucius/Tonks fic before, but The Blue Vial, posted at HP Rare Pairs, takes her writing to entirely different level. Dealing with war, rape, survival and redemption in a both understated and yet emotionally rich way, she brings Tonks to life. I have rarely seen the idea of personal identity and motivation of a rape survivor handled so interestingly, with room for human failings and morally grey zones without succumbing to bleakness. I suspect that this may be triggering for some readers, and others may find themselves interpreting Lucius' actions differently from me (messed up but ultimately sympathetic as another victim of horrible circumstances). However, I hope you give it a chance.

Tonks' choice has repercussions that outlast the war, and ripple through both their marriages for the rest of their lives.

Listening to this was the absolute brightest spot in my week. [personal profile] adistantsun's rendition of As Red as Hearts and Autumn by [livejournal.com profile] rosemaryandrue is a wonderful interpretation of a great story. I don't usually seek out Mauraders fic, but this imaginative story (which is underpinned by some serious and slyly interspersed meta) captured my heart. [personal profile] adistantsun has a wonderful voice, and everything from the character accents to the seemingly professional quality of the audiofile make this absolutely delightful.

There are 2 things I look for when deciding if a reader/performer is someone to follow. One is the obvious: their presentation of the story. Story interpretation, character voices, vocal sound effects, if they use music or other non-vocalized sounds, pacing, and the recording quality all matter. The other is whether they pick stories that I like, especially if they are stories I might not have otherwise discovered. [personal profile] adistantsun is someone I have been watching for a while.

Sherlock's time is limited, so he tends to focus on acquiring the knowledge he finds most necessary in the quickest and most convenient way possible—which, yes, frequently means that he tends towards the theoretical over the practical, especially when the theory is widely explored, frequently elaborated, and easily accessible.

"So you mean," John says, a little thickly, "you've watched a lot of porn," and Irene drops down onto her stomach on the floor with her hair falling around her face and laughs and laughs and laughs.

I Want The Hard Centre, Not The Chocolatey Shell by [personal profile] lokifan. Totally hot Neville/Draco first time D/s fic, which masquerades as 5000 words of PWP, but actually is full of very thoughtful 8th year meta. Dom!Neville is completely believable, and Draco melting under his attentions absolutely did me in.

Harry/Draco hurt comfort, kid!fic (some of epilogue kids exist but that's it for epilogue compliance), long drawn out UST, multichaptered fic. Pairing/Threesome: Harry/Draco,

Word count: ~20k
Summary: Harry’s live-in’s a workaholic being courted — harassed — by an array of weeping minions and an assortment of overprivileged pricks. Harry’s bloody portraits are being harassed — courted — by, well, an assortment of things Harry doesn’t even want to think about. Harry’s had a long week already and so far, his weekend’s not looking much better. At least he can say with certainty there's no place like home...

This was a truly delightful story, with the kind of adult relationship I could only wish for Harry and Draco. The brillance is in the nuance of the writing. The dialog is nearly perfect, and the other characters we encounter, especially Severus and Kreacher, fill out the story to have a rich and real-world feel. Almost anything I say feels like a spoiler - not so much for the plot per se, but for the story craft itself. I have my suspicions about the author's identity, but even if I am wrong, this was written by someone with an enviable mastery of the English language.

Title: No Sign of Love

Rating: R
Word count: 52,384
Prompt: After the war Harry grows more and more unable to cope with responsibility, decisions and life in general. Desperate and scared he ends up at a BDSM club in London owned by Severus Snape.
Summary: Outed by the Daily Prophet, Harry escapes the Wizarding World and ends up on the streets. Desperate and in fear for his life, he Apparates to 'somewhere safe' and winds up in the entryway of the last person he expected to see.

What I loved.
This is exactly the dynamic that drew me to Snarry in the first place, and it is such a pleasure to see it so well done here. Severus is perfect - dominant, caring, sensual, and finally grown into the man he could be without the shadows of his twin masters. Harry is broken, yet retains his inner core of fairness and misplaced pride, tempered with a surprisingly believable innocence.

Draco has a great role here as well, working as a St. Mungo's healer and being Severus' liaison to the wizard world. He has grown up just as I always wanted him to, still clever, but much more of a responsible man than the child we see in the books, and moved beyond the horrors of his late teens with a sense of humanity as well as a sense of humor.

I was initially surprised this wasn't a "Harry submits to Severus because he is broken and thinks he needs pain" trope. (Yes, I also enjoy that, cliche as it has become.) Severus' Muggle-world BDSM club fulfills the role of giving them a rich background, but there is no scening in the story. Instead, it's a wonderful character study with great, slow relationship build as Harry learns to trust Severus as a friend, and eventually more.

Series summary: The fabric of life rearranges itself around the re-emergence of Sherlock.

Quote:
John stilled for a moment. “Sherlock,” he said, a sudden sinking feeling in his stomach.

But it was Sherlock, and he didn't have to say it, because Sherlock knew already. “John, it's not because Moriarty and my brother lack the creativity to imagine anything about my sex life that I don't have one,” he almost bit, sounding more lucid than anyone with eight pints in their system and with someone else's erection pressing into their legs had a right to.

[archiveofourown.org profile] holyfant's 17 chapter work-in-progress is a rich, nuanced exploration of what happens to John post-Reichenbach, and how Sherlock's return changes everything again. It's a delightful read, and at 20 planned chapters, close enough to complete to recommend starting now.

I may have accidentally been seduced into have a second fandom. Or perhaps it's a third, although I am so rarely active in Kushiel as to make it inconsequential.

I have to credit [livejournal.com profile] justwolf. Her HP fic is always compelling, and when she started posting Sherlock stories, I peeked. It felt almost like cheating, since I love HP fandom, and I've often been surprised that someone could embrace many different 'verses at once without getting confused. Of course, I'm bad at multitasking, and very good at completely immersing myself in something to the exclusion of all distractions.

An investigation of transitional epithelium lead me to realize that Sherlock is a perfectly in character as an asexual, an emotional virgin, a delayed adolescent, or as a man who desires sexual interaction but doesn't know a way to approach sexuality in a way that fits with his picture of himself. Yes, [archiveofourown.org profile] justwolf didn't exactly write him as all that in just one story, but the hint was there. Plus, the story featured solo watersports, and Sherlock / John sexual tension.

From there, I meandered around AO3 a bit:

Title: A Cure For Boredom
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] emmagrant01
Summary: They'd never talked about sex in the year they'd known each other. Well, that wasn't quite correct: Sherlock had never said a word about sex; John had bemoaned his personal dearth of it on many occasions.
Rec: I needed to change my knickers about half way into the first chapter, and it just got hotter from there. Sherlock and John are completely in character, and somehow that translates to Sherlock making a case study of John's sexual reactions in a very scientific way: by setting John up in all sorts of situations and observing and cataloging the results. Sherlock may also be discovering his own previously ignored sexuality, but isn't willing to be so open with it as he is about John's. All the social awkwardness and confusing Sherlock / John relationship you could want included, plus [livejournal.com profile] emmagrant01's brilliant descriptions of sex.

Title: The Doctor Is Out
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] violet_pencil
Summary: John closes his eyes, his hand clenched into a tight fist against his belly and still trembling. For god's sake, Watson, he thinks. Maybe a dog would be better this than you are. Better at living.
Rec: This story kind of wrecked me. John copes with strong emotions by escaping into a dog-state, and Sherlock gives John the space to just be. There's aspects of deepening friendship, physical comfort, and the idea of having one's secret self unexpectedly and unquestionably accepted which really make the story shine.

Title: Touchy, Feely and Indecorous
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Basingstoke
Summary: In which John learns to balance a kinky girlfriend, an asexual boyfriend, a ten-inch cock, his sister, the neighbours, his friends, and his blog. Some are more balanced than others.
Quote: "I came to a conclusion," Sherlock said. He sat on the side of the bed. John felt his weight pin the blanket to his hip, then a second, small weight by his shoulder. Sherlock's hand.
"Mm," John said.
"Sex is clearly necessary for you, though I don't know why."
"Mm."
"So I can--do that. I can perform that office for you."

Rec: If you like Ace!Sherlock and sexual!John, this is a must read. Brilliant dialog and characterizations.

Title: Crossed Wires
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] PrettyArbitrary
Summary: John reads Sherlock's diary. It turns out that this is not his first mistake.
Rec: Sherlock journals some very dark fantasies about hurting John. Fantasies. No actual non-con stuff happens, although like John, I was so aroused and confused at my conflicting reactions that I might not have objected to Sherlock crossing the line when they do finally get together. VERY HOT. Mind the warnings.

What happens if your prompt is claimed, but then the story never gets posted during the fest? I have a prompt I really would love to recycle if it turns out the claimant isn't planning to use it. I know that sometimes RL gets in the way, and stories get written late and posted elsewhwere. I don't know who claimed it, or I would just message them and ask. I'm totally okay if someone is working on it to post later, and it was open enough that if it were to be claimed twice, I doubt there would be any overlap between the stories. But if they have abandoned it, I want to prompt it again.

[livejournal.com profile] kitty_fic started a great conversation regarding extra-fest use of prompts. But the discussion didn't include this scenario. Since I don't write, when I get a plot bunny, I really have no other options but prompts to see if I can get the idea explored further.

___________________________________________________________

Most often, I friend journals because the writer has posted a great story I've just read, and I want to be aware of their upcoming work. However, in the last few months, I've also friended mods of fests I was excited by; astute commenters who seem to have similar taste in stories to me; and one person for the delicious prompts she left for [livejournal.com profile] hp_kinkfest. Occasionally I send a PM with a sentence or 2 saying why I friended them, but usually not.

When you friend someone, do you let them know why? Where do you find the most interesting new friends? I'm looking to grow my flist more carefully, since I like to keep up with the persons I find interesting, and I miss posts when there's so many every day.

Rec: I've never read an alpha/omega story before, so I wasn't sure what I was getting into. Generally, I don't love AUs that change the relative ages between the characters, but despite that, this story got under my skin, in a really, really arousing kind of way.
